In a research paper, organization is perhaps as crucial as the findings, discussion and conclusion. They will help the reader understand the contents of the paper and internalize the ideas presented. A typical research paper contains an abstract, introduction, methods, results and discussion sections. The final section is normally the discussion.
- The abstract is a summary of the contents of the paper. The abstract should be brief, state the reasons for the study and the topics that the study covers. It should also outline the study methods or the design used by the researchers. It should also provide a brief description of the results gathered in the study, the main values given and the major results of tests. A brief conclusion of the abstract should summarize the findings.
- The introduction provides what research writers call the literature review. The purpose of the literature review is to provide the evidence required to give the research undertaking a basis. It normally gives the study a context and explains the problem. It then justifies the problem therefore giving the study some credibility. It defines the key terms and outlines the general purposes of the study. These points in the introduction should be arranged in a way that they flow logically.
- In the methods section, the writer of the research paper should provide enough information about the study. The general aim of the methods section should be so that whoever reads the paper has enough information to replicate the study. They should describe the method they used in their research, and the phenomenon they studied, be it a disease or condition. This section should provide the approvals they needed, the raw outcome and the statistical analyses.
- The results section should contain only those results relevant to the field of study. Some writers tend to get carried away and may bore the reader with meaningless results in the context of the study. This is the core of the whole paper and research so one should be careful how they record and present their data.
- The discussion section discusses the relevance of the raw data collected to the study. The writer should be careful in this section not to replicate the numbers recorded in the results section here. This section also discusses the limitations of the study and provides suggestions for the success of future research initiatives.
The conclusion should be clear and not cover topics beyond the scope of the study.
